Flux #2 - Búðahraun

This episode examines distance, time, movement and place from replicated walks into the remote, coastal, Icelandic lava field of Búðahraun. A ‘there-and-back’ route was taken twice, once at dawn and once at dusk; distance is both the distance of the walk and distance heard across the lava field.

As well as the elapsed time of the walks themselves, time is present as the time of day but also the time between the walks – the time of a day – and, as the walks occurred on the summer solstice, the time of the year. Movement comes directly from my footfall, my embodied movement across the rock, but also from the comings and goings of the birds as they, and their calls, songs, and displays move over the lava field.

Together these elements contribute to a sonic portrait of a place but they also create a space to allow a listener to hear a place of their own.

Flux aims to explore the themes of liminal space, temporality and boundaries, whether physical or theoretical. This exploration is carried out through field recording and sound design. Each episode invites an artist, performer or sound recordist to create a show in reaction to these themes. Exploring a space or spaces they deem relevant through their own creative practice.

Athens Inner City Broadcast #69 - Mavi Deniz

This episode is dedicated to my late grandmother Chrisanthi Miliopoulou Gavriilidou. She was my main influence growing up and a strong female figure. She was born in Istanbul in the 30s. She used to climb the huge cargo and oil tanker ships in the Bosporus sea, and dive from incredible heights. She was a storyteller...

She is still remembered as a historical figure in the area of Paşabahçe Turkey. Her late husband was a well-known doctor and they both had a huge impact on the local community, which was made up of many different nationalities and ethnicities. She taught me to respect people and to be a citizen of the world.

She bought me my first spray cans for my first graffiti and supported me in all my ventures until the last day of her life. She was an immigrant, a fighter and a strong maternal figure to many. She did not fear death, not even cancer. She will always be with her loved ones and with me forever.

Çok iyi insanlardı ışıklarda uyusun.

Explorations of the inner city sounds of Athens and surrounding areas through lucid soundscapes and site-specific transmissions.

Gravity Waves and The Spirit World # Midnight in the Haunted Karaoke

In the first hour, Gravity Waves: as preparation for her new album, some long overdue tracks from I Am Fya, some tracks from the new Xylitol & Alien Alarms albums, a couple of remixes from Nil by Noses new trains based album, and some pieces by friends of the Spirit of Gravity.

In the second hour, Spectral Transmissions: Midnight in the Haunted Karaoke. It is nighttime in the city. Tatty terraces and scattered concrete tower blocks, the detritus of a vast up-turned wheelie bin bathed in orange twilight. Around this time of year strange things happen. The ether is populated with unruly beasts.

Pipes can be heard tapping in the darkness, lightbulbs flicker, music plays on an unplugged jukebox and faint calls of distant laughter can be heard echoing in the subway. An empty karaoke booth crackles into life and the soft crooning lament drifts through the still corridors, someone has entered the building.

Contains fragments of: Stomu Yamash'ta's Red Buddha Theatre; What a way to live in modern times

With thanks to: Stephen Mallinder and antivoid alliance.

Commissioned new work from contemporary sound practitioners and other audio choices from experimental electronic collective The Spirit of Gravity.
