Asphyxia: The "Idiote", the Library Wifi and the Suppressed Safe #2 - Potato

This second episode begins with a short reconstruction of a conversation with former bookshop manager "Cynthia", who gives the programme-maker a list detailing the British Library's Suppressed Safe contents - a list which exceeds anything currently in the public domain.

"Cynthia" deemed it such a hot potato that she requested a voice actor completely re-record her voice. After receiving the list, oddly synchronicitous disturbances (of varying significance) materialise.

Originally commissioned in 2022 as part of Radio Art Zone's tapestry of 22-hour radio productions, this project by Daniel R. Wilson is re-presented here in episodic form. Asphyxia hacks the antagonising systems which thwart and forestall projects (its name also acknowledges the asphyxiating atmosphere of long-form radio when made by a single person). It is a damaged would-be radio documentary exploring the Narnia of restricted access material and gatekept employment.

Dronica #63 - Dronica Meets Jody DeSchutter

In this episode, Dronica meets Jody DeSchutter.

Jody DeSchutter is a multi-disciplinary artist hailing from Canada, now living and working in London. She is one half of BAG, a spoken word and sound duo, alongside her partner Dan Allison. DeSchutter writes and performs in conversation with the immersive sound crafted by Allison, the two merging familiar and unknown, and ultimately building new landscapes and contexts.

DeSchutter practices painting and sculpture in tandem with spoken word and sound, working at their intersections and allowing edges to dissolve. She is interested in exploring these 'in between' and ever-shifting spaces.

In this episode, DeSchutter has collaged some favourite and formative work, ideas, and inspirations in anticipation of two BAG albums currently being moulded and burnished: a collaboration with sound and visual artist Charlie Behrens (BAG X BEHRENS) followed by a collaboration with producer, musician, and artist Laima Leyton (BAG).

Nicola Serra, founder of East London's experimental music festival Dronica, presents new and archival material.

Shuffle by Agnès Pe is a formula radio programme taken to the extreme: repetitive, obscure and humorous. Welcome to walkplacedistancetime.

Walking, movement in place, in air, distance through time.

This episode is In the South of an Imaginary Island: Movement 2.

"I have an imaginary island. As part of a Groundworks project, I made a walk around the south of my island. As per the project instructions I walked between randomly chosen stopping points, each with associated ‘prompt’ words. The result is this sound work; this first half played in January and this second half plays in February. More details, the associated text and a concertina-fold book can be viewed here."

Merrie Melodias #3 - Anti-discoteque

This episode focuses on the rare experimental and deviant music that can conceptually be called the "dancefloor destroyer". Its narrative unfolds from early electronic, synthesizer and computer music and we discover that the only Soviet major label without any censorship boldly released music in the genres of EBM and no-wave, sympho-prog, acid-opera and even “post-pop”.

This episode is less about the music of all the countries of the Soviet Union – only focusing on Estonia, Latvia and Russia – but is rather my personal poetic statement, representing the diversity of Soviet experimental music in the late 80s and early 90s. This music sounds extremely modern right now. I chose the neo-romantic twist of Nochnoy Prospeckt's Antidisco Song as the main motif of the release, which opens and closes the show.

Uzbekistan-based DJ and boss of the experimental TOPOT label Eugenie Galochkin presents rare vinyl rips from the Soviet Melodia label. Melodia has released music from all around the world: from obscure Baltic electronica and free jazz from Siberia; to synth-pop from Tajikistan and academic avant-garde from Ukraine. The series will explore how national and cultural characteristics are embedded in musical language.
