First Light's Third Space #4 - London X Tehran: Pouya Ehsaei & Zerone Duo

This month, the first half of Third Space features renowned Iranian musician, producer and promoter, Pouya Ehsaei. Subtle field recordings taken from across London are carefully placed and processed within a half hour of original music composed for the show, showcasing Pouya's ability to translate the labyrinthine city's diverse rhythms and sonic intricacies into modular synthesis.

Comprised of Farbod Maeen and Deniz Tafaghodi, Zerone Duo explore the sounds of their and Pouya's hometown, Tehran, in the second portion of the show. At times peaceful and at other times unnerving, synthesised sounds are masterfully woven into a tapestry of air brakes, announcements and indistinct conversations to interrogate the stirring emotions of a bustling city.

Each month, First Light Records invites two artists to take an unplanned journey with a microphone around their city to curate an hour-long mix. Each show captures the unique atmosphere of a city from each artist's perspective, through music and found sound.

Dronica #61 - Dronica Meets Scual & dThed

In this episode, Dronica meets Scual and dThed for our monthly guest mix on Resonance Extra.

Scual and dTHEd are collaborating for a new audio/visual work, due to be published later this year on Stochastic Resonance.

The mix, in its first half, will introduce the work with a bespoke live performance, and will carry on with some sounds that have been companions of the development process of the project in recent months.

Scual – Special Cures for Uncurable Anesthetized Lovers – is a multidisciplinary project started by Lorenzo Cco in late 2006. Born as an experimental web platform for the collection and publication of multidisciplinary projects, as results of personal works and collaborations. It then moved onto the physical plane, first with the activity of vjing, then by proposing multimedia performances and installations.

Its aesthetic research focuses on the permeation of different media categories, synthesized through the digital process, emphasizing the distortions and discontinuities that occur between those passages. Scual is one of the initiatives behind the creation of the network of artistic research, Stochastic Resonance

dTHEd is a multidisciplinary art trio inspired by the dilemmas stemming from neurodiversity (e.g. ASD) and the anthropocene (e.g. hyperobjects).
They do: music, graphics, videos, interviews, talks, performances, concerts, prints, VR, social experiments and sensory explorations in order to raise awareness, through unexpected beauty.

Asphyxia: The "Idiote", the Library Wifi and the Suppressed Safe #16 - Fetish

This sixteenth chunk of Asphyxia broadly explores audio cassette tapes as a means of transmitting ideas. It contains a manifesto on 'pure volunteering', i.e. an act whereby involuntarily unemployed aspirants forcibly employ themselves by gatecrashing workplaces.

A lost micro-cassette phone recording (yielded during a bin dive) of wildlife expert Chris Packham discussing wood mice with a tabloid reporter is digitised and archived in a guerrilla pure volunteering trespass at an unnamed recording facility. The illegality of pure volunteering lends it an inadvertent thrill, portrayed here in breathless commentary and nibbled process.

Originally commissioned in 2022 as part of Radio Art Zone's tapestry of 22-hour radio productions, this project by Daniel R. Wilson is re-presented here in episodic form. Asphyxia hacks the antagonising systems which thwart and forestall projects (its name also acknowledges the asphyxiating atmosphere of long-form radio when made by a single person). It is a damaged would-be radio documentary exploring the Narnia of restricted access material and gatekept employment.

Method, by Anna Zett via reboot.fm 88.4 FM Berlin for radia.

In this spontaneous audio piece Anna Zett explores the interview as a form of monologue and a form of trialogue. It is centered around the artist’s visit at a professional fortune tellers office in Beijing.

She has brought her own deck of modernist tarot cards, he is willing to share his approach to situation analysis and fate calculation according to Chinese traditions. Mediated by a third person who is serving as translator, they enter a conversation about chance.

Anna Zett has written and directed two radio plays for the public radio in Germany, both of them dealing with voice-based oracles and the challenge of communication.
