Dronica #55 - Dronica Meets Rick Vayo

Dronica meets event curators, creative directors and labels owners in 2021.

In this episode, Dronica meets Rick Vayo, co-founder and curator of Inveterate, an independent label based in London and founded by Tapefeed.

Rick Vayo is 1/2 of Tapefeed who started the solo project to release music material with no sonic boundaries in order to be able to experiment with sound further by blending genres and giving voice to all his different musical influences.

With Inveterate they will be focusing on releasing and supporting artists that share their sonic views and that can help them shape the label sound further with the aim of pushing the boundaries of techno by inviting producers to break the rules, to think outside the box, pushing creativity, and thus finding new and unexpected elements. Ultimately, they want to bring freshness and novelty to this genre and to their scene.

Inveterate: WE ARE CURSED, MORE THAN JUST A HABIT, MORE THAN AN ADDICTION, WE ARE INCURABLE.

Nicola Serra, founder of East London's experimental music festival Dronica, presents new and archival material.

Radia #1051 - Radiopille by Vienna Radia Collective Featuring Liese Schmidt

The exhibition ‘Die Pfeile des Wilden Apollo’ (an exhibition of the art collections in cooperation with the Exhibit Gallery at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna) explores the transition from the Enlightenment to early Romanticism through the central role of music as a vehicle for spiritual experience and national mysticism: sounds of an early folk movement, Nordic drone scapes as an expression of a new national mysticism, bardic singing and the sounds of cosmic forces.

The video work magnetic fan fiction (The Case of Miss – –) by Liese Schmidt responds to four portraits of so-called ‘clairvoyants’ shown in the exhibition, who are under the influence of a mesmeristic treatment. The work weaves together medical, spiritualist and media-technological narratives into a speculative story of mental transmission, in which primarily female, childlike and colonised bodies appear as transmitters and receivers of thoughts, diagnoses and cosmic visions. In a fictional extension of this narrative, the so-called ‘radio pill’ is hacked to send a patient’s thoughts back into the past. The result is a ‘magnetic fan fiction’ that makes a paranoid inner world audible via invisible frequencies.

The ‘radio pill’ had an inspiring effect on the Vienna Radia Collective and prompted Fabi Lux and Karl H. Schönswetter to develop the idea of a radio station travelling through the body.

With contributions by Liese Schmidt, Fabi Lux and Karl H. Schönswetter

A Mixtape Radio #4 - Two Sides of the Island

Joe and Chanelle’s audio recordings encompass ambient sounds, conversation, experimental composition and improvised instrumental response. Cassette drones, loop pedals, voice and guitar are used to echo, mimic or bend over bird calls, thunderstorms, night sounds, indistinguishable chatter, museum reverberations and urban movement. These moments captured to tape are presented in two halves as an A-side/B-side format.

Enriched by visual counterpoints for each episode, Bruna’s critical eye forms an ambiguous tonal narrative from Jake's method of stumbling into excellence. Mountain, valley, glacier, and urban horizon are presented in stereo format, to parallel the A-side/B-side format.

This program has been made on the stolen lands of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, we pay respect to the Elders both past and present.

Project lead and sound by Joe Wilson and Chanelle Collier. Creative direction by Bruna Volpi. Photography by Jake Terrey.

Supported by The Renshaws; Higher Ground Studios.

Asphyxia: The "Idiote", the Library Wifi and the Suppressed Safe #8 - BBC Radio 4

This instalment is almost entirely hogged by a supposéd radio show broadcast by BBC Radio 4 that somehow plops the narrator's inner psyche onto the airwaves as part of its daytime drama entertainment scheduling. Featuring: frustration, shoplifting and things to confuse Ofcom.

Originally commissioned in 2022 as part of Radio Art Zone's tapestry of 22-hour radio productions, this project by Daniel R. Wilson is re-presented here in episodic form. Asphyxia hacks the antagonising systems which thwart and forestall projects (its name also acknowledges the asphyxiating atmosphere of long-form radio when made by a single person). It is a damaged would-be radio documentary exploring the Narnia of restricted access material and gatekept employment.

First Light's Third Space #9 - Chantal Michelle & Cucina Povera

In this episode, Chantal Michelle takes us on a journey around New York in the first portion of this month’s Third Space. Buskers, sirens and footsteps are caught between and across music that captures the frantic and conflicted relationship of the artist and the city.

In the second half of the show, Cucina Povera engages with the broad palette of sounds found around her. This mix focuses largely on sounds rather than composed music, but the musical inspiration that Cucina Povera finds in the city’s droning bells, natural ambiance and repetitive bird song melodies is pronounced.

"An inexplicable draw, a love affair that can’t end, a refusal. Compounded layers, disharmony, the occasional synchronicity that could be mistaken for meaning. Trying to “block it out” but efforts are futile; a bleeding. Pleasure in discord, fear. Joy when looking out the window." – Chantal Michelle

Each month, First Light Records invites two artists to take an unplanned journey with a microphone around their city to curate an hour-long mix. Each show captures the unique atmosphere of a city from each artist's perspective, through music and found sound.
