Midnight GMT New!

purge.xxx #30 - Last Movies by Stanley Schtinter

Running weekly, the series will broadcast the entire catalogue so far in chronological order, continuing here with Last Movies by Stanley Schtinter.

"Profound and riveting, Schtinter’s graveyard perspective offers up a rich and startlingly novel view of cinema, angled through cemetery gates before the closing credits. A remarkable accomplishment." – Alan Moore

Stanley Schtinter reads his book Last Movies (Tenement Press, 2023). Included in the triple-cassette print inlay are Last Movies programme notes by Erika Balsom, and Last Words by Nicole Brenez, a metre-long detached receipt strip with an artwork by Jean-Luc Godard. Three cassettes only, 21 numbered copies only.

Note: this is available as a bundle with the hardback version of the book, available exclusively through purge.xxx/purrrrrj030

This series for Resonance Extra is the first time much of the label's catalogue has been available to hear outside of its material form. It accepts the invitation by Resonance on the basis that none of these sounds are stored. If you want to hear it you need to be able to access the radio at midnight every Thursday.

purge.xxx releases music. It has been celebrated by The Wire magazine for its ‘disregard for the music industry, self-promotion and prevailing cultural norms,’ and an ‘ability to elevate distinct works and the obscure artists behind them.’ purge.xxx only releases music physically, unless a digital alternative has specifically been requested by a collaborating artist. It considers even the recording a compromise, but advocates things.

Gravity Waves and The Spirit World # Emergency Broadcasts

In the first hour, Gravity Waves: a mix which centres around a lengthy track by Lacrima called The Horror is Your Open Mouth, framed with tracks by Melinda Bronstein and some remixes by Nicholas Langley (aka Hz), from his reshapes LP on Third Kind.

In the second hour, Spectral Transmissions: Emergency Broadcasts. Emergencies happen every day in the UK and across the world. They can be caused by severe weather or other natural hazards, by deliberate actions, or as a result of accidents or infrastructure failure. They can be events that happen quickly and are over in a few hours, or they can develop and continue over the course of several days, months, or sometimes even longer.

The situation is once again becoming very uncertain. Automated telephone, fax, e-mail and text messages will be sent. The Emergency Network broadcast system will be activated. Site Sirens will activate. SIRENS will sound. Page not found. Unfortunately the requested page could not be found. This might be caused by a recent update to our website. Please go to our homepage to find what you are looking for. You can listen to news on live radio to find out about the emergency. Make a plan.

Girls B-Side Orchestra #1 - Hume's Nightmare

Our senses, you say, are fallacious. Our understanding is erroneous. Our ideas even of the most familiar objects, extension, duration, motion, are full of absurdities and contradictions. You defy me to reconcile the inconsistencies which you find in them. I haven't the skill for so great an undertaking

I see that there is no need for it. This dialogue concern your religion. But U never really listen until you have to why is that?

Girls B-Side Orchestra is back. And for the first of their series on Resonance Extra, a ghost is eluding their senses.

Special thank you to Zachary Knowland-Barker.

Asphyxia: The "Idiote", the Library Wifi and the Suppressed Safe #19 - Caduceus

Sideways research continues apace... This instalment of Asphyxia sees the return of a mysterious polymath possessed of unspecific 'inside information'.

Chit-chat about data security ensues (covertly recorded, ironically). Following this, the narrator bluffs his way past the security cabin at the Midland Road entrypoint to the British Library's goods yard, where a bin-dive yields an unknown writer's diaries, discarded by the library for uncertain reasons.

Meanwhile, the use of tin-foil to eliminate electromagnetic interference is trialled upon the narrator's Zoom recorder which is susceptible to 50Hz hum.

Originally commissioned in 2022 as part of Radio Art Zone's tapestry of 22-hour radio productions, this project by Daniel R. Wilson is re-presented here in episodic form. Asphyxia hacks the antagonising systems which thwart and forestall projects (its name also acknowledges the asphyxiating atmosphere of long-form radio when made by a single person). It is a damaged would-be radio documentary exploring the Narnia of restricted access material and gatekept employment.

Lepke B: Looperama #5 - Body Electric

A Looperama smorgasbord, where mystery abounds! Unknown sounds and a mystery guest!

Commencing with some unidentified library music (aka production or stock music)... Bright and upbeat melody with urgent and propulsive beats, just right for the modern ear... neither alive or completely dead.

Featuring a segment of Offrandes for Soprano and Chamber Orchestra (1921) by Edgard Varese superimposed with random found (Professor Pyg?) radio broadcasts and fragments, some eerie music from a Halloween sound effects compact disc, other sonic snippets intersperse around the thudding ostinato of Electric Lady (1973 ) by Geordie, a British rock band from Newcastle, most notably active in the 1970s.

Geordie line-up included: Vic Malcolm (lead guitar), Tom Hill (bass guitar), Brian Gibson (drums) and Brian Johnson (lead vocals).

To conclude, a surprise appearance from a mystery guest ...guess who! With music that you can dance to, - whatever wavelength you're on!

Lepke B's blissful disregard for the sacred in life has placed him as one of the testcard knights with a totally unique approach to sound plunderphonics and visual art.
