Midnight BST New!

purge.xxx #6 - Ice Burns by Bruce Gilbert

This series for Resonance Extra is the first time much of the label's catalogue has been available to hear outside of its material form. It accepts the invitation by Resonance on the basis that none of these sounds are stored. If you want to hear it you need to be able to access the radio at midnight BST every Thursday.

Running weekly, the series will broadcast the entire catalogue so far in chronological order, continuing here with Bruce Gilbert's Ice Burns.

"Holy, sacred and festive is the day that Bruce Gilbert grants your label the permission to publish his work. And holy, sacred and festive are the minutes that you, listener, will spend in it. Recorded live at Cafe Oto in London, 2017, in tribute to Mika Vainio."

purge.xxx releases music. It has been celebrated by The Wire magazine for its ‘disregard for the music industry, self-promotion and prevailing cultural norms,’ and an ‘ability to elevate distinct works and the obscure artists behind them.’ purge.xxx only releases music physically, unless a digital alternative has specifically been requested by a collaborating artist. It considers even the recording a compromise, but advocates things.

The Sculptor Speaks

'The Sculptor Speaks' by Olivia Louvel is a resounding of a 1961 recording of Barbara Hepworth’s voice, shining a singular light on her creative process.

This first iteration, premiered on Resonance Extra, celebrates the date of birth of the British sculptor, on the 10th of January 1903.
Recorded by Hepworth herself in her studio in St Ives, the tape’s initial purpose was for a recorded talk with slides for the British Council. Having unearthed the tape at the British Library, Louvel designed for it a completey new sound environment using Hepworth’s voice as a major element in the composition.

Louvel’s practice is built upon a long-standing exploration of the voice, sung or spoken, and its manipulation through digital technology. Currently studying for a Master’s degree at the DMSA, University of Brighton, the resounding of the tape ‘The Sculptor Speaks’ forms the basis for her research, investigating the voice from preservation to resounding whilst taking further the voice of Hepworth into the physical space as a multi-speaker diffusion. A second iteration will follow.

Thank you to Sophie Bowness, trustee of the Hepworth Estate and DMSA, University of Brighton.

Radia #1000 - 1000 Likes by Sarah Washington

This is a special collaborative show to mark Radia’s 1000th week of broadcasting. It features contributions from 14 member stations and affiliates of the network, which between them collected the voices of 122 participants.

The remit was simple: ask several people to speak a list of 10 things they like, and compile their voices into a short composition. The result is a heartwarming and amusing gathering of over 1000 genuine likes, which stand in proud relief to the hollowed out kind we have have become accustomed to on social media. Participants were surprised to be asked what turns out to be a very good question.

Concept and realisation by Sarah Washington.
