Temporary Palaces # (Part i of iii, Tarzan the Apeman)

Kyra Simone is a writer from Los Angeles, now based in Brooklyn. Her fiction and poetry have appeared in a variety of literary journals, including The Baffler, The Brooklyn Rail, BOMB, Conjunctions, Fence, The Anthology of Best American Experimental Writing, and elsewhere. She is a member of the publishing collective Ugly Duckling Presse, and part of a two-woman team running the editorial office of Zone Books.

"From the stuff we unfold in the morning and throw in the recycling bin at night, Simone coaxes the rhythms of cyclical life, that baseline on which extraordinary events and crises exert their pressure. The world she constructs is recognisable, textured, gently humorous—but also luminously, piercingly exact, possessed of the strangeness of seeing something for the first or the last time".

Alexandra Kleeman, author of Something New Under the Sun.

"I was hooked by the very first sentence of Kyra Simone’s Palace of Rubble: ‘A breaking wave collapses on the bank before two half-naked women on white Arabian horses.’ The sentence is so precise, down to the use of the erotic “collapses.” Plunged into this direct, clear, and mysterious arrangement of words, I was always left wondering what will happen next. Where will the next sentence take me? I was never disappointed. Simone is able to maintain and shift that propulsive curiosity throughout the book. While dancing with us, each sentence is a journey. Each story is a multi-faceted gem—a ‘beguiling dream of eternal cinema".

John Yau, author of Genghis Chan on Drums.

"Majestic flights of fancy spun around ravaged landscapes and savage realities, these are remarkable prose poems for the 21st century".

Chloe Aridjis, author of Sea Monsters.

"Reading Simone’s work is reminiscent of an archaeological excavation. The writing has dug to the past and emerged in the future, passing on its way those civilisations, kingdoms and palaces long since blown away or buried, it is covered in their dust. I can’t help but think, isn’t this madness? Isn’t life beautiful".

Vanessa Onwuemezi, author of Dark Neighbourhood.

Temporary Palaces is a special triplicate of hour-long broadcasts that serialises an unabridged rendition of Kyra Simone's debut collection, Palace of Rubble (Tenement Press, 2022). Initially inspired by a photograph of one of Saddam Hussein’s demolished palaces, Simone’s Palace of Rubble is a collection of one-page stories composed primarily of single words culled each day from the front pages of the newspaper.

Worthwhile Unions #5 - BWU Guest Mix

This episode begins with a 40-minute guest mix from London-based musician BWU.

Having built a collection of live musical performances spanning 40 years, both found and recorded first-hand, BWU posits themselves as an apparition, transient and anonymous, an audience once-removed.

Revisited online and in solitude, these recorded, ripped and re-recorded audio files develop with their degradation a distinct, self-reflexive overlay of absence.

Worthwhile Unions is a radio series by Anna Clegg with a focus on meeting points. Often collaborative and pulling heavily from online sources, the series works to extract a kind of cinema of feeling, contradicting and evasive, from dense combinations of music, sound and samples.

South American PhoNographic Mornings #16 - Karen Power “Amazonian Words”

Amazonian Words (2017) is based on a single field recording made in the Southern Peruvian Amazon Jungle in July 2016, which is the duration of the piece. My intention is simple: to share a little of how I hear spaces like this one. This piece invites us to creatively imagine new contexts for each and every sound that we hear. To ‘compose’ with the environment as you listen. Every single place during every single minute is unique.

Karen’s compositions utilise two primary sources; acoustic instruments and everyday sounds, spaces and soundscapes. Her output is diverse - both in its approach and delivery. Her primary aim is to capture and translate the essence of an idea through any artistic means necessary.

Stéphane Marin presents a weekly series of fifteen short soundscapes recorded in the mornings at various locations throughout South America. Entitled « South American PhoNographic Mornings » this series for Resonance Extra forms part of a wider project, « Each Morning of the World », which invites sound artists, composers and recordists globally to share their own specific point of listening, either through a raw field recording or original composition.

The Sound of Contact

Fifteen contact improvisation practitioners – accompanied by live sound works by Rastegah and Ania Mokrzycka (Pel Bonheur) – will be dancing on the carpeted wooden floor of the Resonance Extra studio in South London, with the guidance of contact improvisation teacher and choreographer, Rick Nodine.

Contact Improvisation is a structured but improvised partner dance based on communication through touch. It is often practised in duet form but, unlike other partner dances, it does not follow gendered norms of partnering. Dancers respond to one another’s touch and move in response to that touch, making instantaneous decisions about pace, direction and momentum, and honing their skill of listening: contact dancers listen not only with their ears, but also their skin.

Tune in to immerse yourself into the soundscape of bodies colliding, lifting and being lifted, rolling, sharing weight, and practising a non-violent form of corporeal autonomy and co-operation.

Curated by Queer Kittens and Chrys Papaioannou, in collaboration with Rick Nodine, Rastegah, Milo Thesiger-Meacham and Ania Mokrzycka (Pel Bonheur).

A project broadcast live from Resonance Extra's studios on the 11th December 2022, exploring the aural dimensions of contact improvisation.. Listening through the skin, communicating through touch. What does listening through the skin sound like? What is the sound of contact improvisation?

Motherhood and Creativity # On Creativity During Pregnancy

This is changing slowly, and balancing work and motherhood remains a challenge. However, many women also feel a new surge of creativity during pregnancy and when entering motherhood, and there is scientific evidence suggesting that the physical changes brought on by motherhood promote a new sort of creativity.

This episode is an informal exploration of this topic, with contributions from Tatiana Kolganova, Asami Kiuchi Oishi, and Maya Felixbrodt.

Curated and produced by Leonie Roessler for Studio LOOS, with funding from the Gemeente Den Haag.

Artist and composer Leonie Roessler explores creativity during pregnancy and the postpartum period of a woman’s life, both stages traditionally disconnected with working as an artist. It has been challenging for women to secure a career in the arts and to pursue art as a profession rather than simply as a hobby. When women emancipated themselves via contraception, they could pursue artistic careers, but still, they often had to choose between their work and becoming mothers.

Neil Luck & Mimi Doulton: Five English Folk Songs

The idea that song, and the performance of song have some kind of efficacy or sympathy beyond the realm of living humans is an idea that lives and thrives in places far flung from this cluster of mild islands, but has gotten lost and buried in 21st century Western empiricalness. We hope this opens some windows for you.

Some liberties have been taken with interpretation; melodies swapped out, lyrics changed, structures altered, sounds invented, stories retold, truths averted.

Tracklisting:

  • Phalay

Secret Reformation-era Votive Antiphon from Stoke Minster (anon).

  • Lichens

Early Renaissance Invisibility Spell from England & Denmark. Adapted from The Grand Grimoire (misc., anon.)

  • Evergreen

Setting of HeartKickUKTM defibrillator manual text, accompanied by vaguely traditional leaf-blowing techniques.

  • Oh Great Goat

Animal Husbandry Song, (anon. Yak Herders), circa Ambleside.

  • Janey Has A Friend

Folk song from the 1980s about The Enfield Poltergeist, sung to the tune of “The Bow Gallows”. The story concerns a case of a notorious poltergeist haunting in a small residential house in Enfield between 1977-1979.

A family including two young daughters (Janet was one of them) were tormented by flying objects, toppled furniture, levitations, loud banging. The ghost, who introduced himself as “Bill” spoke through Janet’s own vocal cords in a gruff, low register.

Recorded at Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart, Germany, and live at Cafe Oto, London, UK. Recorded, mixed, edited by Neil Luck. Cafe Oto live recordings made by kyle acab. Cover illustration by Monika Czyzyk.

Five English Folk Songs by Neil Luck & Mimi Doulton is a collection of marginal traditional singing techniques and songs dug out by Neil and Mimi. These five songs all explore magical forms of communication with non-human energies; Flora, Fauna, Deities, The Dead, and the Quasi-Dead.
