female:pressure #64 - R3NATA

R3NATA is the co-founder of WOMXN, a collective and platform that was born out of the desire to increase the visibility of women behind the decks in Mexico City. She lives in Berlin since 2017 and actively participates in the electronic music scene.

In 2019, she started hosting WOMXNIZED, a radio show under RBL Berlin with the aim to invite new guests every two months (DJ/producer) to showcase their work and get to know them better. The other month, she takes over the decks. The music selection of R3NATA is mostly focused on melodic rhythms for the dance floor. She believes that the only good system is a sound system.

Twice-monthly broadcast showcasing electronic music produced by members of the female:pressure international network of female, transgender and non-binary artists practising in the fields of electronic music and digital arts.

First Light's Third Space #5 - Adam Sherry & Lee Tesche

This month, First Light's Third Space is visited by artists Adam Sherry (London) and Lee Tesche (New Smyrna Beach, Florida).

In Adam's own words, the first half of the show was "recorded over December 2021 as a difficult year drew to a close, the one ahead now coming into view offering hope. This mix features songs by some of my good friends and favourite London based artists, the sonic threads of a community, intertwined with numerous sound walks, flickering moments of inspiration + a few unreleased dead forest fragments share an insight into a bright but transient moment in time."

Best known for his work with the band Algiers, Lee's mix for Third Space encompasses sounds from the coastal area around Cape Canaveral and central Florida. A collection of several years of field recordings, local short wave and marina radio stations, Atlantic Center for the Arts residency work, found ¼” tape reels from the county courthouse, NASA audio archives, local music tapes, and his own collaborative projects during this period, give shape to a fascinating area that his family has inhabited for over half a century.

Each month, First Light Records invites two artists to take an unplanned journey with a microphone around their city to curate an hour-long mix. Each show captures the unique atmosphere of a city from each artist's perspective, through music and found sound.

The Sound of Contact

Fifteen contact improvisation practitioners – accompanied by live sound works by Rastegah and Ania Mokrzycka (Pel Bonheur) – will be dancing on the carpeted wooden floor of the Resonance Extra studio in South London, with the guidance of contact improvisation teacher and choreographer, Rick Nodine.

Contact Improvisation is a structured but improvised partner dance based on communication through touch. It is often practised in duet form but, unlike other partner dances, it does not follow gendered norms of partnering. Dancers respond to one another’s touch and move in response to that touch, making instantaneous decisions about pace, direction and momentum, and honing their skill of listening: contact dancers listen not only with their ears, but also their skin.

Tune in to immerse yourself into the soundscape of bodies colliding, lifting and being lifted, rolling, sharing weight, and practising a non-violent form of corporeal autonomy and co-operation.

Curated by Queer Kittens and Chrys Papaioannou, in collaboration with Rick Nodine, Rastegah, Milo Thesiger-Meacham and Ania Mokrzycka (Pel Bonheur).

A project broadcast live from Resonance Extra's studios on the 11th December 2022, exploring the aural dimensions of contact improvisation.. Listening through the skin, communicating through touch. What does listening through the skin sound like? What is the sound of contact improvisation?
