On the 2nd October 2022 First Terrace went live on Resonance Extra from Southbank Centre as part of the label's fifth anniversary celebrations, with a curated triple bill for the Purcell Room, featuring Peter Broderick’s tribute to The Beacon Sound Choir, the premiere of a dance opera by Bianca Scout and an AV performance by Specimens.

First, the premiere of The Heart of the Anchoress, a contemporary dance piece from Bianca Scout's upcoming multimedia project The Mortal Instrument of Bones. This newly commissioned gothic opera, produced with the Daughter Mary ensemble, establishes a richly seductive sensory field, where fractal patterns of poetry, moving image and sound design are sampled, remixed and looped, through subtle, episodic mutations of classical dance.

Next, a set by Sofheso in which he offers his singular selection of broken rhythms and blacklight textures.

Then, Specimens presents Power, Pain and Privilege, a specially commissioned audiovisual work made in collaboration with filmmaker and photographer Lucie Rox. The work explores both artists’ experiences as mixed race people living in the UK, from hair salons to racial slurs, and the uncomfortable relationship between skin tone and privilege.

Finally, Peter Broderick breathes fresh life into the euphoric group singing practices of The Beacon Sound Choir, his erstwhile community choir in Portland. With the help of the anarchic, virtuosic experimental choral group Musarc, they perform new arrangements of the original choir material – short and odd original songs, experimental compositions and the BSC’s unique brand of half-improvised, half-structured vocal drones.

dREM is a curatorial project by Allegra Shorto to explore and expand the relationship between art and dream. Each episode is a soundscape lasting the duration of an REM sleep cycle, roughly 90 minutes, to be slept through. Artists are invited to fill this time as they imagine it. The sounds may be incorporated into the narrative of the dream, alter its content or partially wake listeners, making them aware that they are dreaming. Mimicking the cyclical stages of the sleeping mind, the resulting soundscapes flit from silence to resounding repetition, perhaps causing dream ripples. Participants include artists Gregory Barsamian, Lee Berwick, Delia Gonzalez, Dr Keith Hearne, Kurt Hentschlager, Jacob Kierkegaard, Robert Rich and Chu-Li Shewring.

Trace is a project exploring liminal space of the Irish Border between Ireland and Northern Ireland through photography and field recordings taken at almost 200 border crossings. The project aims to document open and free movement currently enjoyed on the Island of Ireland in the context of the current political negotiations. Each episode explores a different section of the border.

Andy Backhouse presents a two hour show of new and unusual music and sounds - playing everything from Free Jazz to Field Recordings. This is an open-format show with a difference.

Fifteen contact improvisation practitioners – accompanied by live sound works by Rastegah and Ania Mokrzycka (Pel Bonheur) – will be dancing on the carpeted wooden floor of the Resonance Extra studio in South London, with the guidance of contact improvisation teacher and choreographer, Rick Nodine.

Contact Improvisation is a structured but improvised partner dance based on communication through touch. It is often practised in duet form but, unlike other partner dances, it does not follow gendered norms of partnering. Dancers respond to one another’s touch and move in response to that touch, making instantaneous decisions about pace, direction and momentum, and honing their skill of listening: contact dancers listen not only with their ears, but also their skin.

Tune in to immerse yourself into the soundscape of bodies colliding, lifting and being lifted, rolling, sharing weight, and practising a non-violent form of corporeal autonomy and co-operation.

A project broadcast live from Resonance Extra's studios on the 11th December 2022, exploring the aural dimensions of contact improvisation.. Listening through the skin, communicating through touch. What does listening through the skin sound like? What is the sound of contact improvisation?

In this episode, Gwaith Swn’s Sonic Darts has been taken over by the collaborators of the V International Biennial Edition of Sound Art Sonandes, Bolivia. Compositions and works played during the show were made as the result of workshops carried out by international artists who were invited to the festival and a working group made up of local creators and composers.
