Resonance Radio Orchestra # 'Suspension of Belief'

Here they present Suspension of Belief, a piece for rock-climber, writer, field recordings, music. Suspension of Belief combines live rock-climbing with text and sound (both musical and incidental) in a specifically radiophonic work made for the pan-European series Intimacy and Distance.

While boulder-champion Gaz Parry takes his friend Kate Mills up the forbidding cliff face of the Col d'Ifac in Alicante, veteran soloist Jim Perrin meditates on the meaning of rock climbing from a studio in France. Gaz can't hear Jim. Jim can't hear Gaz. The two meet only in radio, on an equal footing with the production team and the listener. Conceived and produced by Ed Baxter and Chris Weaver. Engineers: Nick Hamilton (London), Bob Drake (Caudeval). Music: Max O'Brien. Announcer: Richard Thomas. Mixdown: Michael Sinden.

The Resonance Radio Orchestra is a floating pool of musicians, engineers, sound-effects creators, actors, writers, composers and broadcasters devoted to making live radio-art. It is based in central London as the in-house artistic wing of Resonance104.4fm, under the direction of Ed Baxter.

Tenement Press Presents SJ Fowler’s MUEUM # III (of IV)

"With the apocalyptic vision of Ballard and the acerbic attitude of Céline, MUEUM scatters human detritus over the shiny Perspex of our most dearly loved vitrines."Chris McCabe

"A showcase, ransacked with horrid delight: Fowler's MUEUM presents the placid, lurid violences of surveillance and exhibition with startling and brutal stylishness. A seething triumph."Eley Williams

A novella of ludic menace, a puzzle without pieces, SJ Fowler’s MUEUM pictures the amassing and dismantling of a public edifice, brick by brick, in prose that refracts and breaks the light emitted by history’s ornaments and history’s omissions. Suspended in unknowable time there is a city; in the city, an event, a conflict. Amid the ash, fog and cloud, there is the manufacturing of a space—a many-winged museum on the make.

On the plinths, exquisite remnants of life present and past—adorning the walls, portraits of gentle torture sit hand in hand with brutal and statuesque portrayals of camaraderie—and the gift-shop is littered with plastic curios and gilt revulsion. Goya, as atmosphere rather than artwork, hovers amid iron age ghosts, bronzed ideas, and antiqued anxiety.

Pacing the hall, atrium and corridor, there are those who keep the museum—the various midwives to the building’s demands—and those, like the reader, who merely visit; those who pass through the vacant galleries adrift with questions. What can I touch? What is next to Egypt? What is hidden in Mesopotamia? Where do we eat? Drink? Where is the entrance? The exit? Following the tradition of the Nestbeschmutzer authors (“one who dirties their own nest,” vis-à-vis Bernhard and Gombrowicz, et al), in Fowler’s curt, spiralling, and acute work, the museum’s keepers will answer.

A four-part, unabridged broadcast of SJ Fowler’s debut novella, MUEUM — as read by the author — recorded on location in Resonance Extra's South London studios. Produced by Dominic Jaeckle and Milo Thesiger-Meacham.

Akiha Den Den #3 - Silencing Hand

Now: With Cuttings silenced, Peri too is gagged. A chilling warning that the rumours, ignorance and fear in Akiha will reel you in, brainwash you, tie you up in a tangle of words.

Missed the show? Catch up on Mixcloud.

A unique audio drama series created by writer/director Neil Cargill and musician/sound designer Simon James featuring an original electronic music score and full cast including Ian McDiarmid, famed for his role as Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars saga, as Cuttings – the radio ham who picks up a mysterious voice. The voice belongs to a girl (Joy McAvoy, from Ken Loach's The Angels' Share, and Filth) trapped in an abandoned amusement park called Akiha Den Den. Singer Wendy Rae Fowler (featured vocalist with bands such as Queens Of The Stone Age) lends her distinctive Alabama tones to the multi-layered soundscape as it becomes clear there's a whole community there, whose words and music become woven into a mesmerising plea for help. Everything becomes highly charged when one of the trapped inhabitants finds a way into our world – where his impact on us could be as devastating and far-reaching as an unknown, unseen virus.

minusSPAMminus

minusSPAMminus (SPAM 6) is a work made for radio and of spam facts, + and - regarding spam, personal stories triggered by spam in a material, non-material, historical and emotional manner, all assembled by Jasmina Al-Qaisi and Ralf Wendt with their invited friends and collaborators who decided to respond to the email they sent with the word SPAM in the subject.

This radio work arises from an invitation from Afrika Diva Collectif in Kinshasa and uses a non-linear approach to documentary, creating a circular audio collage with voices and audio accounts of daily life disturbances. We asked everyone and ourselves: how can life minus spam be? What would a life without spam look like?

Participants: Orakle Ngoy, Sara Ndele and Gina Ndaya (Afrika Diva Collectif); Claire Serres, Abir Tawakalna, Pati Sayuri, Beya Othmani, Ali, Nico and Lav (CUTRA pop feminist magazine); Henrik Nieratschker, Gustavo Mendez and Maria Karpushina (Research and Waves); Parveda Chandra Kiran, Özge Açıkkol and Seçil Yersel (odaprojesi group); Heidi Salaverria, Alexandru Udrea-Raj, Tina Klatte, Simona Constantin, Cristina Bogdan, Mriganka Madhukaillya, Sebastian Gerstengarbe, Alexander Klose, and Schnelle Musikalische Hilfe. Naviar Haiku Fest # 2022

2022's edition of the festival was an evening of music and poetry reading at London's iconic Café OTO on the 7th December, featuring performances by members and friends of Naviar, working in the fields of ambient, electronic, and contemporary classical music. Each set is introduced by a haiku selection recited by poets of The British Haiku Society.

Full lineup:

Daniel Green is an artist and educator. His artistic practice explores the objects and media we use to occupy our time, and how they are used to give our lives meaning. Daniel’s work has been exhibited within Campbelltown Arts Centre, Firstdraft, Pelt, Artspace and BUS Projects, and has performed at Electrofringe, The Now Now Festival, Liquid Architecture, Cementa and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.

Since 2014 Neil Stringfellow has released music as Audio Obscura - covering a variety of musical themes that touch on ambient, electronics and more experimental soundscapes. Audio Obscura albums have included a post-classical 'Anthropocene Trilogy' based on spoken word pieces around climate change, soundtracking the dystopia of George Orwells' 1984 novel, field recording in rural Norfolk Churches and recently a collaboration with a post-rock group themed around the NASA Voyager missions.

Leon Clowes is a transdisciplinary artist that messes about with his lived trauma for artistic endeavour. He started in music and sound and now does all sorts. Wherever. In music/sound, these days, he mostly tries for quiet and peaceable stuff but does occasionally revisit pounding queer past.

Encym explores un-guitaristic territory by layering, collaging and shaping improvised loops. Fused with polyrhythmic beats and noises to become cinematic, atmospheric, otherworldly ambiences, their grittiness owing to the many years Roland was based in London. George Crowley is a saxophonist, clarinettist, composer and promoter based in London. As a performer he is active across a range of styles, with improvisation at the heart of his work.

Born in London to mixed Indian/British heritage, Simon studied music at The Centre for Young Musicians and Morley College, then philosophy at Durham University, and is now based in Stroud, Gloucestershire. Simon has worked as a composer & sound designer in theatre, film & contemporary dance. His recent work is a combination of loop-based cello compositions and atmospheric improvisations, field recordings and modular synth.

Manja Ristić is a violinist, sound artist, published poet, curator and researcher. She graduated from the Belgrade Academy of Music (2001) and was awarded a PGDip as a Solo/Ensemble Recitalist from the Royal College of Music, London (2004). As a classical solo and chamber musician as well as a composer and an improv musician Manja has performed all across Europe and the US, and has been involved in collaborations with established conductors and performers, multimedia artists, poets, theatre and movie directors.

A series of annual events by Naviar Records broadcast live on Resonance Extra, featuring workshops, talks and live performances focused on experimental music and haiku, exploring how these two art forms can influence and inspire each other.

walkplacedistancetime #10 - Kittiwake Triptych No. 3: Dunstanburgh

Welcome to walkplacedistancetime.

Walking, movement in place, in air, distance through time.

Today’s episode is Kittiwake Triptych No. 1: Cullernose.

This is the third of a triptych of recordings of my walking to “the same place” – a Kittiwake colony – twenty minutes sitting at the place and my walking away back to my starting point. The three “same places” are one in rural Newfoundland and two in rural Northumberland. At each site, on another day, or at a different time of the same day, each recording would have been different.
