Summer 2026 # New Works for Radio

Sunday 2nd August 2026 12:10 - 00:00 BST

Resonance FM & Extra broadcast a summer’s worth of radical radio featuring new and archival radiophonic artworks, community activism, sound art, experimental literature, documentary, innovative music and more. Curated by Milo Thesiger-Meacham.

Today, the following new works for radio:

The Salar de Atacama in northern Chile was once the bottom of a sea but is now one of the driest places on earth. Located in the high-altitude desert in the Andes, the salt flats contain rare geologic and organic systems, but vast exploitative mining operations (currently lithium and nearby copper mining) continue to radically reshape the land for eons to come. The intense UV solar radiation due to the high altitude and the specific geological formations serve as ready analogs for off-planet conditions; thus this area has been a training ground for off-planet robotic probes and for developing mining techniques that may be applied on Mars or elsewhere. Meanwhile Earth’s ecology is becoming a little more like Mars every day. In Children of the Sun, a Martian returns to the damaged planet, encountering industrialized and wild lands in a process of metamorphosis.

Children of the Sun combines acoustic field recordings and electro-magnetic signals from various part of the spectrum recorded on the Salar de Atacama from 2017-2024, together with two-way radio communications of mining workers and recontextualized NASA Apollo mission communications, specialized electronic instruments, and voice in order to bring documentary sounds into the realm of science fiction, and to listen with the industrial desert and follow some of the many fields of influence at work.

Children of the Sun is one part of a larger suite of audio and audiovisual works entitled We Build Ruins based on intensive fieldwork in the Atacama Desert I have undertaken since 2017 with collaborator Rodrigo Ríos Zunino.

  • Vague Wanderings: Music on the Marshes

Vague Wanderings is a bi-monthly collaborative live show from the 24-26 cohort of School of the Damned, exploring imagined spaces, temporary autonomous zones, collecting field recordings and the fertile topsoil of vague terrains. In this special extended broadcast, not important and School of the Damned come to you live from a hidden woodland on Walthamstow Marshes. Featuring performances from YUNA, Li Song & Titus Barker (duo), Yewen Jin, Conal Blake, Regan Bowering & David Sappa (trio), Li Yilei, Pentu, and interviews conducted by Edward Sanderson. An audio work by Davide Tidoni. Fragments From the No-TAV Struggle (2023) consists of a series of stories, personal reflections and direct experiences from the No-TAV movement, an Italian grassroots movement that has opposed the construction of the second high-speed train line between Turin and Lyon since the early 2000s. Through the voices of various people involved in the movement, the work brings together some of the central themes of the No TAV struggle, including: the technical flaws and deficiencies of the high-speed project; the relationship between struggle, community and personal growth; and the military defence plan put in place to protect the TAV construction sites.

Davide Tidoni is an artist and researcher interested in the relational dimension of listening, and in the physical experience of sound. He works with live performance, intervention, audio recording, video and guided listening, and published a sound ethnography on the ultras group BRESCIA 1911.

The Sentence by Alistair Fruish, read by Daniel Copeland, is a 47 thousand word single unpunctuated sentence entirely made up of monosyllables. It concerns a prisoner who is given a drug which slows down time. For more information visit fruishon.co.uk

"The Sentence is the sort of cultural bar raising that we so desperately need right now.” – John Higgs

“This is the best thing I’ve ever heard about prison and UK general insanity...” – Carl Cattermole (The Prison Survival Guide)

"A bold, bar-rattling gem." – Alan Moore

A short piece made with granulated vocal samples and an analog tape feedback loop.

  • Farewell Tour

An ambient psychrock band by Joe Wilson and Chanelle Collier. The project developed as a cathartic response to grief. Centred on themes of love and death, and their music incorporates field recordings, guitars and vocals. The band's entire existence is a continuous drawn-out goodbye, bringing a unique urgency and finality to every performance and recording. It is also an advocacy project that brings conversations and awareness to death literacy, and patient rights. “An epic love story of a band where every song is their last.“ Visit joewilson.space.
