Summer 2026 # New Works for Radio

Resonance FM & Extra broadcast a summer’s worth of radical radio featuring new and archival radiophonic artworks, community activism, sound art, experimental literature, documentary, innovative music and more. Curated by Milo Thesiger-Meacham.

Today, the following new works for radio:

• Gesture in Transit by Magda Drozd

Composed in 2025 during a train journey through Japan, Gesture in Transit brings together instrumental fragments and field recordings collected over several years. At the centre of the piece is a self-built string instrument encountered in a musician’s studio in Johannesburg, constructed from piano strings stretched across a metal frame and amplified through pickups. For this composition, several hours of improvised material was processed through effects pedals, with fragments selected and reshaped. Through layering, fragmentation, repetition and electroacoustic processing, Gesture in Transit reworks these improvised sounds into new relationships, allowing their meaning and function to evolve throughout a work shaped by passing landscapes, changing moods and temporary conditions of listening.

• Excess and Understanding by Anna Barham

A performance text that confronts the gatekeepers of speech. Written through the mishearings of speech-to-text dictation, it asks "whose voice is sound and whose voice is noise?" Moving from women's depiction as leaky vessels in classical literature to intimate queered archives of modern philosophy, the piece tracks how trauma overwrites the body, culminating in a breakdown where grief momentarily breaks through self-censorship.

• Rough for Radio

Rough for Radio is an evening of radio-art presented by Resonance FM, recorded at The Hanging Gardens, Llanidloes, Wales on 9 July 2026. In this unique show, four artists present radiophonic experimentation, dramatic monologues, cinema for the ear and short-form sound art. They also present roughs from their work in progress, “Rhwng dwy afon: Taith i feddwl y tir / Between two rivers: a journey into the mind of the land,” made with local people around the sources of the Severn and Wye.

etc), Ed Baxter (Resonance Radio Orchestra; Statue of Liberty Big Band; BASCA Composer of the Year 2013 etc). Special guests include members of Tai Haf Heb Drigolyn.

• Atalanta vs. AC Milan 1989/90: Comments on the Chants by Davide Tidoni

An audio work by Davide Tidoni. In Atalanta vs. AC Milan 1989/90: Comments on the Chants (2025), Stefano Pozzoni – a former member of the Brigate Rossonere, one of AC Milan’s ultras groups – comments on chants sung by AC Milan supporters during the Atalanta–AC Milan match on September 6, 1989.

The chants were recorded by an unknown supporter and reached us through their publication in the first issue of Encré dans la tribune, a French fanzine on ultras culture. Drawing on these recordings, Pozzoni explores the meanings behind the chant's words and melodies and reflects on how they were used in their social and cultural context. His account offers insight into the relationship between chanting practices, social composition, and the habitus of AC Milan’s ultras groups in the late 1980s.

Davide Tidoni is an artist and researcher interested in the relational dimension of listening, and in the physical experience of sound. He works with live performance, intervention, audio recording, video and guided listening, and published a sound ethnography on the ultras group BRESCIA 1911.

• CRiSAP Presents: Electromagnetic Fields: Artistic Research and Radio Waves

How might electromagnetic listening bring sound art, environmental research and scientific sensing into closer relation? This symposium-on-the radio brings together artists and researchers engaging with the electromagnetic spectrum as both material and site of inquiry. Fifteen contributors present work exploring natural radio phenomena, electromagnetic listening practices and questions of spectrum access. The programme moves between artist talks, panel discussions, audio artworks and live performance. Across these presentations, artistic research offers forms of situated knowledge production, operating alongside and in dialogue with social, scientific and technological methodologies.

The symposium takes place on the radio as a live broadcast accessible via FM in specific locations and globally via a dedicated online ‘listening room’ with a text-chat function for listeners to interact with and contribute to the ongoing broadcast. Live captions can be enabled via Chrome’s accessibility settings. Listeners are invited to tune in and out across the afternoon and evening, encountering the programme as a distributed, time-based experience.

This is a Creative Research in Sound Arts Practice (CRiSAP) event curated by artist-researchers Hannah Kemp-Welch, Lia Mazzari and Anna Clock. The symposium is hosted on the radio by artist cooperative Soundcamp and locally from their studio in London.
