Radiophrenia 2026

This September we partner with Radiophrenia, the groundbreaking radio art festival and art radio station broadcasting across Glasgow on 87.9FM and online, featuring hundreds of new and original works for radio, a series of 20 newly commissioned special projects, public Live-to-Air performances, live in-studio shows and performances, long-form works, shorts and pre-recorded features.

In making this year’s selections Radiophrenia was assisted by guest curator Semay Wu. Through a public engagement programme Radiophrenia has been working with seven different community groups to realise a new series of sound and radio works.

As in previous years the majority of the programme will be made up from selections submitted to an international open call for sound art and radio works. This year Radiophrenia received so many submissions that we felt it necessary to extend our broadcast across an additional weekend just to squeeze it all in.

The station aims to promote radio as an art form, encouraging challenging and radical new approaches to the medium. Radiophrenia first began broadcasting in April 2015 with subsequent editions in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2025.

12:00 am - 12:15 pm

Figures in a Landscape is a 12-hour 15-minute radio work telling the story of an environment gradually becoming conscious of itself. As listeners dip and out, they visit a world both familiar and alien, science and fiction. Much of the sound derives from a long duration recording of an installation presented in September 2025. In both works, synthesized and recorded sounds are shaped and modulated by real-time streams of seismic and geomagnetic data from the Eskdalemuir Seismic Observatory in the Scottish Borders. Rather than ‘map’ data in a rational way, sounds are floated upon or textured by it, as the boughs of an oak are floated by an unseen breeze and dappled by streams of sunlight falling upon them through taller trees. 25 paragraphs about Figures in a Landscape are added in voice-over, describing a recent visit to Eskdalemuir and other, quite varied, reflections.

Artist bio:

Jorge Boehringer is a composer, artist, and writer who explores texture and time, creating sonic ecosystems from natural forms, processes, and patterns. Based in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Jorge works as an itinerant artist and interdisciplinary researcher, specialising in spatial audio and data sonification. He studied composition at the Centre for Contemporary Music at Mills College with Pauline Oliveros, Fred Frith, and Alvin Curran, and in workshops with Allan Kaprow, Paul DeMarinis, Maryanne Amacher, and Gordon Mumma. He received a PhD from the Centre for Research in New Music at the University of Huddersfield where he studied with Bryn Harrison and Peter Ablinger.
