Duck Night
A long-duration field recording by Lucia Hepp.
"These ducks feel as though they are teaching me in my sleep. Their calls have infiltrated so many nights. Back in the day, I dreamed about ducks and having to drive my older sisters in a car. And then there is Duck Island which is a gated little piece of land in the middle of the pond, and it is the Garden of Eden for those ducks.
The sound piece holds a duration the sleeping listener can only partly account for. The calls drift beyond their source while entering dreams or returning as something already learned. Michel de Certeau’s The Practice of Everyday Life is also somehow in there, that the distance between what is received and what becomes of it. The calls seem to have acquired another existence, somewhere between the recorded night and its imagined place in the subconscious. Whether this familiarity belongs to hearing or dreaming, or subsequent recollection remains unresolved."
